Baltic Sea Labour Forum
The Baltic Sea Labour Forum was established during the BSLN Final Conference. With the forum the promotion of transnational social dialogue in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) will proceed after the BSLN.
About 40 representatives from several institutions participated in the constituting 1st round table, chaired by Franz Thönnes, German MP, and discussed the “Memorandum of Understanding”, the establishment of a Steering Committee and possible future topics for the forum. Important topics were clearly related to cross border mobility challenges in the BSR like lack of skilled workers, youth unemployment, fair working conditions, rights of migrant workers, and education and training questions. Afterwards the memorandum was signed by representatives from 21 institutions. The forum work will initially be coordinated by the CBSS Secretariat.
During the year 2011, special attention was paid to the relations with the Russian tripartite stakeholders in order to invite them to participate in the Forum. Russia is an important part of the Baltic Sea Region in terms of labour market, economy, environment and energy policy. Two Russian institutions are already represented in the forum.
The core aim of the Forum is the promotion of social dialogue and tripartite structures and cooperation as a crucial element of sustainable economic growth and social development in the Baltic Sea Region. The participating social partners believe that their responsibility is to be actively influencing the development of the labour market in the Baltic Sea Region through development of the transnational tripartite social dialogue. The Forum is a network for exchange of experience and communication between the key actors. The BSLN Steering Comittee calls for the European Union to recognise the Forum for Social Dialogue in the revision of the implementation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
